My Daughter Had a Pain-Free Period Without Birth Control

Having a teenage daughter can mean a lot of things. From pimples to heart breaks there are a lot of emotional rollercoasters built in. Starting your period can make it even worse.

If she has painful periods or PMS, it can be a tough time as a mom. All you want to do is make her feel better. So, you take her to the OBGYN in hopes of finding a solution, but all you walk out with is a prescription for birth control and a recommendation for ibuprofen. But you’re thinking, “There’s really no other option?”

But there is.

A natural alternative to birth control for painful periods and PMS

I wasn’t into the idea of my 13-year-old being put on birth control. I might be a little biased because none of them ever helped me, but I wanted to give her something that was built to relieve her pain. Like most of us looking for solutions to period pain, I was once bluntly told that birth control and painkillers were the only solution OBGYNs were allowed to give. Birth control was created to inhibit pregnancy, but it’s become a one-size-fits-all solution for every women’s health issue. And I was determined to find something else for my daughter that worked.

I spent a lot of time researching what was out there, and I found quite a few options, but I was picky. I wanted to make sure it would be effective and that it wouldn’t be a burden for her to take. A lot of what I found were supplements that had to be taken daily or herbal tinctures that needed to be drank—and my daughter doesn’t like tea. I wanted something she could take at the onset of her symptoms instead of as a daily preventative.

I found a few that could be taken as needed but only one that had impressive clinical trial results to back it up. Semaine’s PMS & Period Support is the first clinically studied supplement for rapid relief. These results were collected after just one period with their product.

  • 88% reported less overall discomfort
  • 73% reported fewer mood swings
  • 75% reported milder period poops

On top of these results, I also learned the company was founded by two sisters who’ve been diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS, so I figured they understood painful periods better than anyone.

Rachel S

In fact, they were the first guinea pigs for their product and it worked for them. You know a product is good when the cofounders use it themselves.

The best part is that it is hormone-free. I love knowing that I’m not interfering with my daughter’s hormone fluctuations but simply helping alleviate her discomfort. This is also good to know for the future because if my daughter does want to be on birth control later, I know she can still count on this supplement with the knowledge that it won’t make her birth control less effective.

How my Daughter Feels on Semaine’s PMS & Period Support

The first cycle with PMS & Period Support went off without a hitch. Normally my daughter would ask to skip school and I would have to skip work to take care of her. It would be a day filled with heating pads, hot baths, OTC painkillers, TV, and sleep. But at the first sign of her cramps, I gave her two of the little green capsules and within about 30 minutes she noticed her cramps were subsiding. Off to school she went and she didn’t even skip gym class or feel like she needed a nap. She took another dose at lunch to get her through the day and came home ecstatic. I set up our auto-ship subscription that same night through their website because I was never going to let her struggle through a painful period again.

What’s inside those green capsules?

This supplement is packed with highly potent ingredients that get to the root cause of PMS and period pain.

  • For cramps and bloating: Quercetin, Boswellia, Magnesium, Curcumin
  • For mood and anxiety: Ashwagandha, Green Tea (caffeine-free), Vitamin D3
  • For hormone balancing: Milk thistle, Resveratrol

Another thing worth mentioning is that Semaine uses highly bioavailable sources of each ingredient and makes those that are normally hard for our bodies to absorb, more bioavailable. This was important to me because I wanted to make sure what my daughter was ingesting was actually able to be used by her body. This makes them highly effective.

I want every mom to know that they don’t have to put their daughters on birth control for them to experience symptom-free periods. There is a highly effective, natural, clinically backed option that offers rapid relief without synthetic hormones.

  1. Do have to take daily or just during period? Is there a liquid or powder version, my daughter doesn’t swallow pills.

    • They do have a gummy version! You take 2 gummies up to 6 times per day, 2-3 days before your period begins. Continue taking 2 gummies up to 6 times per day to help with mood swings, cramps, or bloating during your period.

  2. My daughter, now 18, has been struggling with debilitating lower right quadrant pain for 5 yrs. Two laparoscopies, one exploratory and one recently with cauterization of endometriosis cells was suppose to help stop the pain. It didn’t. A week after the surgery, the debilitating pain was back. She’s been on 4 different types of birth control and now she’s on myfembree for a partial hormone shutdown. She doesn’t like the myfembree: gives her hot flashes, weight gain, fatigue. Dr says not PCOS, no cysts, endometriosis was cauterized. She missed three weeks of school in a six weeks period due to the pain. Do you think your product would help? Should we consult her dr before taking your product? She is also on tizanidine, and amytriptaline. How would she know if your product works since she’s on a partial hormone blocker?

    • Your daughter’s journey sounds incredibly challenging, and it’s understandable that you’re exploring all options. Semaine’s products, like The Daily and PMS & Period Support, are designed to support hormonal balance and inflammation, which might offer some relief. Since she’s on medications, it’s best to consult her doctor before adding anything new.

Tracking changes in her symptoms can help determine if a supplement is making a difference. Sending you both support—chronic pain is tough, but you’re not alone.

  3. Are your products third party tested? Do these herbals interact with any medications like antidepressants or ADHD medications? Thanks!

    • Great question! For each batch of Semaine’s final product they do a few stages of testing:
      1) Test the raw ingredients to confirm that the concentrations of the key ingredients are accurate, and that they are pure and uncontaminated
      2) Test the final product after it is produced. This confirms that the concentrations are right, nothing was contaminated during production (no gluten, etc)
      3) Test for stability months afterwards in the final package to make sure everything is stable and the expiration dates are correct.

They also ran clinical trials and you can see the results here: https://www.semainehealth.com/pages/clinical-trials

Many of Semaine’s customers are on antidepressants and SSRIs. There are no known interactions but you should always check with your doctor to be sure!

  4. What about a teen with little to no estrogen? She was diagnosed with PCOS and has just started a natural progesterone to bring on a period. She does not want birth control.

    • The Daily was actually made for women with PCOS! Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, meaning their bodies can’t use insulin effectively. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. When the body’s cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, blood sugar levels rise, and the body produces more insulin to compensate. High insulin levels have an impact on the ovaries stimulating the production of hormones. That can then create symptoms like pain, acne, weight gain, etc.

Semaine ran clinical trials on their supplement to measure how it impacted real women. Fasting insulin declined. Cholesterol declined. Energy improved.

  5. Can this be taken daily to help start your period? My daughter has PCOS and is very irregular. She hasn’t had a period in a year.

    • It is not known to have any interactions with SSRIs, and many Semaine customers are on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication. Best to check with your doctor if you are concerned though!

  6. The list of ingredients notes that the green tea is caffeine free. I’m just curious if it’s decaffeinated then? Green tea, by nature, is not caffeine free. Decaffeinating is generally done by chemical processing (but still yields a small % of caffeine in the product regardless) and we like to avoid that. Can you offer information on the caffeine content or how it is caffeine free?

  7. My daughter doesn’t have much cramping or bloating, but has debilitating lower back pain during her period. Would this help with that? She currently takes birth control plus Naproxen, but neither help much

  8. I just bought what I thought was this product at Walmart. But it is senaine PMS Relief. Is this the same product? The name is different.

    • The gummies are called PMS Relief and the capsules are called PMS and Period Support. The ingredients are largely the same and which you choose is more a matter of preference. I suspect they will update the name to match for both products at some point. Sorry for any confusion!

  9. The ad that popped up said there would be a code for 20% off. Then made me register and told me it would be 15% off. When I actually got to check out, it said 10%.

I would like to have the 20% off that I originally inquired about. Please contact me so I can try your product.

    • It doesn’t treat those issues, but it can help address the inflammation that makes periods more painful when you have endo and cysts.

  10. Did the owners, the twins, use this product daily with another form of treatment for endometriosis? My daughter was just diagnosed , the pain is awful to watch

    • Good question. Eventually both sisters needed surgery for their endometriosis. It is a lifelong journey for both of them, but Semaine helps them a lot. That’s why they started the company in the first place. Hope that helps. I’m sorry you have to watch your daughter go through this.

  11. Can this be safely taken with prescription medications? My daughter takes synthroid and anxiety medication.

    • Low thyroid function is extremely common in women. Although none of these supplements should interact with her thyroid conditions or medication (we have lots of women on thyroid medication who take this), it is a good idea to check with her primary care doctor, and here’s some information that you can share with them. http://www.semainehealth.com/pages/talk-with-your-doctor

There are also no known interactions between any Semaine supplements and SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), which are commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety. Again though, it’s best to ask her doctor to be sure!

      • Her thyroid was completely removed due to cancer and yes just need to make sure 100 percent there would be no interactions so that is very helpful. Thank you!

  12. My daughter can’t take BC pills due to increased risk of blood clot risk. Any of these herbs increase the risk of blood clots?

  13. Do you testing for purity? Some of those herbs can contain high amounts of lead. Also, some of those herbs are known to cause liver failure. Any reports of this?

    • For each batch of their final product Semaine does a few stages of testing:
      1) Test the raw ingredients to confirm that the concentrations of the key ingredients are accurate, and that they are pure and uncontaminated
      2) Test the final product after it is produced. This confirms that the concentrations are right, nothing was contaminated during production (no gluten, etc)
      3) Test for stability months afterwards in the final package to make sure everything is stable and the expiration dates are correct.

  14. I am interested in trying this product. I see the 9 ingredients listed above and I’m curious if those are the only 9 ingredients or are there others not mentioned? Thank you!

    • Semaine wholeheartedly believes in being open and transparent with our community. That’s why they ensure every ingredient is clearly listed on each product bottle, detailed on their respective pages on the website, and even have a dedicated page just to share insights about the ingredients. There is nothing in the supplement that isn’t listed on the bottle!

  15. Does it come in other forms like a powder or liquid that can be mixed into water? My 12 year old has trouble swallowing pills of any kind. I still have to buy children’s chewable ibuprofen.

  16. My daughter has painful periods and frequently gets ovarian cysts because her egg didn’t release appropriately. Has anyone had experience with this and cysts? She’s currently on BC because it helps her release the egg.

  17. Will this help with endometriosis? Would it need to be taken all month to inhibit the new growth or intermittent when pain is present? Pain comes and goes all month.

    • Generally Semaine focuses on taking it the week of your period, but there is no reason you can’t take it all month if it helps. Cofounders Lauren and Catherine both suffer with endometriosis, so they know what you’re going through. They have many customers with endometriosis who report improvement in their symptoms with Semaine!

  18. Several of these supplements have been recommended to me for near constant pain from chronic inflammation due to a connective tissue disorder and mast cell histamine responses. I am in menopause now, but did suffer from painful periods that birth control in my teens o ly made worse. Later,I found out I had PCOS and low progesterone. It was cost prohibitive for me to get all of these supplements, but with them together, I am going to try it to see if it helps my inflammation and pain..can it be taken daily?

    • All of our products can be taken daily. We focus on the week of your period for our PMS supplements, but if they help you during the month you can absolutely take them that way!

      • My daughter is taking birth control pills to control fibroids
Are these pills good to replace the BC pills?

      • Semaine’s supplements are designed to support hormonal balance and overall well-being, but they don’t replace prescription birth control pills. Birth control works by regulating hormones in a specific way to manage conditions like fibroids, so it’s best to consult with your daughter’s doctor before making any changes.

    • It was a pleasant surprise to read your comment. I have Ehlers Danlos and so do both my daughters. We all have painful periods and ya know what comes with connective tissue disorders is pain all over. Mast cell issues for all of us too. I’m also in menopause and was diagnosed with type 3 diabetes at 48. I wonder if it’s actually PCOS and maybe I don’t really need to take insulin. I’m interested in this product for sure.

      • That’s great. Let me know if you have any questions. Or if you try it I’d love to hear the feedback after a month or two.

    • There are a lot of women who take Semaine PMS & Period Support to help with heavy flow. Many of the ingredients have been clinically studied to reduce prostaglandin levels and this helps with both pain and reducing flow volume. Users with heavy flow report using 30-50% fewer pads or tampons during their periods overall because it is shorter and lighter.

  19. HELP!! My twin daughters diagnosed with lean pcos.. on bC for a year and the side effects are horrific for them! Need to get them off it!! Any literature on your product you can share??

    • Sure! You can read the results of Semaine’s clinical trials on their website. I would recommend The Daily, which was specifically designed with PCOS in mind. Then you can add in PMS Relief gummies or capsules during the week of her period to help control inflammation and other period symptoms.

  20. My daughter has terrible breast tenderness before, during and after her period. Will this product help?

    • It could yes! She starts the supplement when she feels period symptoms and takes it throughout her period. She can take 2 at a time, up to 4 times per day as needed.

  21. Does it help with nausea and vomiting? My daughter can’t even keep down a sip of water the first day or two.

    • Oh gosh that sounds awful. It is possible that by reducing the inflammation, her symptoms could be reduced. They have a 30 day happiness guarantee so it could be worth a try!

    • You start when you feel period symptoms and take it throughout your period. You take 2 at a time, up to 4 times per day as needed.

  22. Very curious about trying this for my daughters. My oldest has been diagnosed with endometriosis and had to have surgery at age 17! She is on birth control and still has some pain.

    • Yes, PMS & Period Support from Semaine Health can help with menstrual cycle regulation to some extent. This supplement is formulated to address inflammation and discomfort associated with menstrual cycles, which can play a role in regulating periods. By reducing inflammation and supporting the body’s natural processes, it may help create more regular and less painful menstrual cycles.

  23. My daughter is unfortunately on birth control because she won’t stop bleeding otherwise but her periods are 10 outta 10 still painful. Can she use this and be on birth control?

    • Good question!! I would love to get my daughter off birth control and try this but I’m scared because she passes out from painful periods! Maybe I’ll try it together first because she still experiences pain and then try to get her off of them??🤷‍♀️

      • She can take Semaine with the birth control as well. They have many customers who do that.

    • How long are her monthly periods? My daughter just started 2 months ago and she’s having heavy bleeding for 7 days straight. I wonder if there is a refund policy if it doesn’t work ?

      • Semaine does offer a refund policy if it doesn’t work for you!! And it can help with heavy flow. There are a lot of women who take Semaine PMS & Period Support to help with heavy flow. Many of the ingredients have been clinically studied to reduce prostaglandin levels and this helps with both pain and reducing flow volume. Users with heavy flow report using 30-50% fewer pads or tampons during their periods overall because it is shorter and lighter.

    • Yep. Their supplements are vegan, gluten free, soy free, non-GMO, and hormone free!

  24. How does it help with PMS? Does it need to be taken for the entire two weeks before the period starts to help with PMS symptoms?

    • Semaine’s PMS Relief Gummies and capsules offer fast acting period relief as needed. They help to:

      – Support healthy inflammation response, reduces stress, and relieves menstrual discomfort.
      – Enhance mood, soothes bloating, aids in balancing histamine levels, reduces headaches, and digestive issues.
      – Help filter excess estrogen to balance mood and hormones.
      – Alleviate overall PMS symptoms and discomfort associated with your period

You start when you feel period symptoms and take it throughout your period. You take 2 at a time, up to 4 times per day as needed.

    • It’s for anyone with period pain and discomfort. This article is just focusing specifically on teens using the product as an alternative to birth control!

  25. The ingredients look great! I’m post menopause and take most of these supplements! I’m glad to see more holistic solutions. I’ll share for others.

    • Want to know how it helps pcos. My daughter 17yo diagnosed with it. No regular cycle and testosterone high. On birth control but causing lots of emotional issues

      • The Daily was actually made for women with PCOS! Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance, meaning their bodies can’t use insulin effectively.
