Does anyone else ever get overwhelmed by the number of probiotic strains available on the market? Anyone? Bueller? Just me? And how do you know which one to pick?
I’ve tried a whole host of different brands and strains. Everything from ones that need to be refrigerated to ones that are shelf stable. For a while, I ditched the supplement form altogether and focused my efforts on getting them through foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha. But I noticed that some days I just didn’t feel like eating or drinking any of those things and sometimes they made me feel bloated or gassy, which was kind of annoying.
Eventually, I ended up with a really bad case of gastritis where I literally couldn’t leave my couch for more than a few minutes the pain was so bad. The only food I could stand eating was bone broth. I knew I needed a solid, yet gentle probiotic to support my gut health and reduce the inflammation so I could eat real food again and get my life back. But also, to reap all the benefits that they provide, like:
- Boosting skin health
- Supporting a healthy immune system
- Aiding in weight loss
- Reducing symptoms of digestive disorders
- Elevating mood and mental health
- Fighting inflammation

What you didn’t know you needed with your probiotic
I started by doing some research on probiotics and found some interesting information. Like, what a prebiotic is for instance. Most people haven’t heard of them, but they’re actually really important for probiotics. Prebiotics are fibrous, nondigestible substances—okay hang with me here, I’ll explain why you want to consume them. Since we can’t digest these carbohydrates, they pass into the lower digestive tract and act as food for healthy bacteria, aka probiotics, and promote their growth.
So, if you pair prebiotics with probiotics, you can optimize the work the good bacteria do to promote gut health. They work together synergistically to improve gut health and according to research, prebiotics can boost probiotics’ survivability.
I switched my focus to searching for a probiotic that also had prebiotics in it. But then I stumbled upon another ingredient I didn’t know I needed, ginger.

Most people know the benefits of ginger for the stomach. It’s often used to relieve nausea and it has been cited for its help in reducing inflammation. But there’s even more. It also
- Decreases gas and bloating
- Aids in gastric emptying
- Soothes the stomach
- Reduces cell damage because it’s an antioxidant
Okay, what the heck is gastric emptying? It’s the rate at which food exits the stomach and continues the digestive process. Ginger essentially encourages efficient digestion, so food doesn’t hang around in the gut. Say goodbye to gas and bloating from a sluggish digestive tract!

The search for the perfect probiotic for women
Now that I was sold on getting a probiotic that also had prebiotics and ginger in it, the hunt began. I’ll be honest, I was getting a little scared away by price points. Until I stumbled upon Semaine’s Pre+Probiotic for Women. It had exactly what I wanted in it, and it wasn’t going to burn endless holes in my pockets.
If you noticed that little detail in the title like I did, you might be wondering, why is it specifically made for women? Well, that sent me down another research rabbit hole, and here’s what I found. Women must take into consideration that they have higher rates of digestive issues than men. Good grief, can we ever catch a break?! So why is that?
Hormone levels throughout our cycles may affect conditions like indigestion and IBS. Lower levels of hormones around our periods and perimenopause can cause flare-ups—period poops anyone? Estrogen and progesterone have been shown to relax the smooth muscle of the GI tract, which slows the transit time of stool. Also, food in the stomach tends to empty into the intestines at a slower rate in women than in men. Slow colon emptying is also more common in women which can lead to constipation.
So yes, we do need a probiotic made specifically for us. And I am personally convinced that ginger is a non-negotiable after reading all that information about a slower transit time.
With science-backed strains we can trust, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum, I realized all the symptoms I was struggling with would be addressed.
- Vaginal infections: Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Digestive issues: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum
- Weight loss: Lactobacillus plantarum
- Skin health: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum
Speaking of vaginal health, did you know that gut health can affect vaginal health? The thing is that what’s healthy for gut microbiota can cause issues for vaginal microbiota, which can lead to infections. There is research that suggests that supporting your gut microbiota can help your vaginal microbiota be in a protective state.
How Semaine’s Pre+Probiotic worked for me

Within a few days of starting the probiotic, my stomach started to feel better.
- My inflammation went down—I had defaulted to leggings and sweatpants at this point
- My appetite came back
- I wasn’t quite as gassy
- My bowel movements became very regular—thanks ginger!
As someone with a very sensitive stomach, I can say with certainty that it is perfect for anyone who has the same issue. Also, the founders of Semaine are IBS girlies, so you know they created this supplement with that in mind. Don’t just take my word for it though. Can you explain these two sentences which seem to say contradictory things?
“The thing is that what’s healthy for gut microbiota can cause issues for vaginal microbiota, which can lead to infections. There is research that suggests that supporting your gut microbiota can help your vaginal microbiota be in a protective state.”
Thank you, Maggie
Sure! One example is fermented foods like yogurt or kombucha. These are great for gut health because they contain probiotics that support a healthy microbiome. However, they can sometimes disrupt vaginal health if they introduce or encourage the overgrowth of yeast, potentially leading to infections in people prone to yeast imbalances.
Another example is high-sugar prebiotics, which can feed beneficial gut bacteria but also provide fuel for yeast in the vaginal area, increasing the risk of yeast infections.
Balancing the needs of both microbiomes is key!
Semaine’s Pre+Probiotic for Women is designed to support both gut and vaginal health by carefully selecting strains and ingredients that benefit both microbiomes. The prebiotics in Semaine’s formula feed beneficial bacteria without fueling harmful yeast overgrowth, reducing the risk of disruptions in the vaginal microbiota.
Hope that helps.
Does this cause weight gain
No it shouldn’t have that effect. If anything an increase in fiber has been shown to aid in boosting metabolism.
Does this work with or help gastroparesis
Navigating the journey of gastroparesis can be challenging. Emerging research highlights the potential benefits of ginger, probiotics, and soluble fiber for managing this condition. Soluble fiber, in particular, transforms into a gel-like substance in water, aiding in bowel regularity, cholesterol management, and blood sugar regulation — all important aspects of digestive wellness.
For a deeper dive into how fiber may assist with gastroparesis, here is a good article to start with: https://gi.md/resources/articles/can-fiber-assist-in-preventing-gastroparesis
Starting any new supplement regimen, especially with conditions like gastroparesis, should always involve a conversation with your healthcare provider. To facilitate these discussions, Semaine prepared detailed whitepapers on their supplements, ensuring you have all the information needed for an informed chat with your doctor: [www.semainehealth.com/pages/talk-with-your-doctor](http://www.semainehealth.com/pages/talk-with-your-doctor)
Let me know if you have any more questions.
I have IBS D. It’s so hard to leave the house at times. I’m reading this product works. I have tried so many probiotics. Still not satisfied? Will this really help. Yes, their Pre+Probiotic is designed to support overall gut health, which can include helping with digestive issues like diarrhea. It works by populating your gut with beneficial bacteria and supporting a healthy microbiome balance. The fiber in the supplement absorbs water as it moves through your system, which can be beneficial in managing diarrhea. Then the ginger helps soothe your painful gut.
You could also look into taking an additional fiber supplement to help! Have you talked about fiber with your doctor?
Is this product helpful for women who have gut issues but is post menopausal?
Yeeesss! It’s really helpful no matter what phase of menopause you are in. A key benefit of fiber, particularly in relation to digestive health, lies in its support for digestive emptying. Efficient digestive emptying is crucial as it ensures regular bowel movements, which not only help in reducing bloating over time but also aid in the overall functioning of the digestive system.
Ginger is an anti-inflammatory that helps reduce pain and improve digestive emptying, a significant contributor to digestive discomfort.
Finally the probiotic strains they included are designed to help you build up a healthier gut microbiome. The two strains they include are the best studied and have the most clinical research to back up their efficacy.
I am struggling with UTI issues also. I haven’t read anything about this product helping in that area. Does it?
They actually have a product specifically for UTIs called Urinary Tract Cleanse and Protect. The reviews speak for themselves but it’s a clinically tested, high quality supplement that we highly recommend.

We always recommend discussing with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially to ensure Semaine is safe for your medical conditions and current medications. Your health and safety are our top priority, and a doctor’s guidance is invaluable in this process. If you need any further information about their products to share with your doctor, they have developed white papers to make the conversation easier.

If you take a blood thinner is it ok to use this because of the ginger?
Many inflammation-reducing products, whether natural or pharmaceutical, can slightly thin the blood. This is because they often target pathways shared by both inflammation and blood clotting processes. While generally not a concern, if you have certain health conditions or take medications, it’s wise to consult your doctor before starting any supplements. Stay informed and stay safe! 💚

Is it only for women? My son’s gut is horrible: nausea, constipation, diarrhea, etc. Could it help him or do you have something that can help him?
Men can take this and Semaine has lots of male customers!
I take miralax for constipation. Can I take it along with this ?
Sure but you may not need to! Note that fiber can cause bloating, especially when introduced suddenly or consumed in large amounts. I recommend that you start slow and stay well hydrated. Start with 1 Semaine capsule per day and work your way to up 2 over the course of a week or two.

It’s possible but best discussed with your doctor. Semaine has whitepapers that they created to make it easier to talk about their supplements with healthcare professionals. Hope this helps a bit!

The dosage is 2 capsules per day.
I have IBS/C, always had problems with my lower abdominal pain never really had a stomach ache. It was always in my lower abdomen over the years. It has gotten progressively worse, where I finally was diagnosed with irritable Bob with constipation. It got so bad that the last time I had to go to the ER I was such pain, but I almost blacked out. My pressure dropped to 60/70 I needed two bags of potassium and fentanyl for pain that’s how bad I’m on Linzess but I have to stick near the bathroom. I can’t do anything else when I take that pill. I’m going to turn into a loaf of sourdough bread because that’s all I eat. I don’t want to be taking Linzess all the time because when I do, It’s not a normal elimination. I’m basically changed to the toilet.

These do not require refrigeration. The capsules can absolutely be opened up but I don’t find them to be huge at all. Very manageable!
