Is it Dementia or Just a UTI?
If you have a parent or grandparent with dementia, you know how tough it can be to watch them succumb to it over the years. They have good days and bad days, and the bad days can be really hard. Especially if you’re their primary caretaker.
But did you know that sudden onset dementia may not be dementia at all, but rather a UTI? I was a bit flabbergasted when I learned that.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

My mother lives by herself and has for the last five years, ever since my father passed. Her demeanor is usually very calm, cool, collected, and she has some wry humor. And she’s very independent. She gets herself to her doctor’s appointments, doesn’t need a walker, and still tends a garden.
I typically see her every Wednesday for dinner and then Sunday afternoons to help her with her weekly harvest. Her garden is a good size, and she has a very green thumb.
One Wednesday evening she was acting a little off. More agitated than usual and less talkative. I asked if she had a bad day, but she brushed it off and sent me home before we played our usual round of 500 Rummy after dinner. I chalked it up to her being tired or just needing some alone time.
When I stopped by on Sunday, I was shocked to find her napping in her La-Z-Boy instead of already in the garden. I woke her up and she seemed a bit disoriented at first but eventually, we made our way to the backyard. She was slower than usual and a bit reckless in the way she harvested, almost like she forgot how.
This all seemed very sudden, and it took me by surprise, so I got her an appointment with her doctor to see what was happening.

The shocking diagnosis
After a physical exam and questioning, he asked my mother to give a urine sample. I was confused, she was post-menopause and she wasn’t complaining of any frequency, urgency, or burning sensations.
I asked the doctor why he wanted to see if she had a UTI and he told me that sometimes sudden onset dementia is actually a UTI. What?!
He gave me a list of symptoms and told me the behavior change is usually significant and happens very quickly, over a period of one to two days. That sounded familiar.
- Agitation
- Restlessness
- More difficulty concentrating
- Hallucinations
- Extreme fatigue
- Becoming withdrawn
- Tasks they could do before are suddenly not as easy
- Sudden urinary incontinence or leaking
- Cloudy or even pink or brown-colored urine
- Strong odor to the urine
Sure enough, the test came back positive. My mother didn’t have dementia, she had a UTI that presented differently than it had in her younger years.
As soon as she got treated for the UTI, her behavior symptoms started to fade, and she was her old self. But I didn’t want her to go through that again. The doctor recommended cranberry juice or D-Mannose as a preventative, but my mother could not get a glass of 100% pure cranberry juice down. The D-Mannose pills were large, and she had to take multiple, several times a day.
I needed something more potent and easier to swallow. Preferably just one pill per day.
One red capsule a day keeps the urologist away

After some research, I found a supplement with rave reviews that only required one pill per day and was a small pill she could easily take. Hallelujah!
Semaine’s Urinary Tract Cleanse & Protect only has two ingredients. No fake fillers, no additives, no BS. Just cranberry phytosome and hibiscus extract.

- Cranberry Phytosome effectively and efficiently clears out bacteria and reduces growth in the bladder. It’s a special, clinically studied cranberry that is over 3x better absorbed!!! (Did you know some supplements won’t even reach your bladder?!)
- Hibiscus Extract acts as a gentle diuretic to flush the bladder and aid in cleansing.
However, what pushed me to buy was the science data on the special cranberry they use in this science-backed formula. They speak for themselves.

- 100% of the participants in a trial where they needed a catheter in a hospital stay were UTI-free 3 months after the hospital stay when the took 120mg of cranberry phytosome daily
- In another study, participants saw up to 55% reduction in biofilm growth in urine after taking 120mg of cranberry phytosome every 12h for a week
- In another study of diabetic post-menopausal women, found that over 6 months, women taking 120mg of cranberry phytosome had 83% fewer UTIs.
I ordered my mom a 3-pack and then put it on auto-ship for her, so she’ll never run out. I’ve also set up subscriptions for her friends and neighbors too. She was so thrilled with her results that she told everyone she knew and got them on board.
If you have a parent or grandparent, you need to get this for them. It’s so healtheir to support your bladder before you get an infection, rather than relying on frequent doses of antibiotics that can be really unpleasant. The pills are also small and easy to swallow. It’s worth the peace of mind and right now you can get.
Grab your first risk-free bottle of Urinary Cleanse and Protect today for a healthier bladder and a reset to your prime years.
Use code BYEUTI to get 20% off.

Don’t let your loved one go through UTI-induced delirium.
Keep their bladder healthy so they can keep living life to the fullest.

Would this be ok to take if u have diverticulites?
I always recommend discussing with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially to ensure Semaine is safe for your medical conditions and current medications. Your health and safety are our top priority, and a doctor’s guidance is invaluable in this process. If you need any further information about our products to share with your doctor, we have developed white papers to make the conversation easier.

Do you have a phone # that I can call?
Semaine doesn’t operate a customer service phone line but you can email them at support@semainehealth.com and they are very good at getting back to folks quickly!
Several times I took for at least 2-3 months and ended up in ER being admitted for several days on multiple antibiotics and sepsis. Not much in the way of symptoms except lots urine at night. We just moved so I don’t really have a doctor so will have to rely on self-testing and urgent care or ER for
Meds until urology clinic can fit me in in 4 months. Any suggestions ? I have not tried d-mannos.
Has your doctor talked to you about estrogen cream?
Maybe find a CVS that has a Minute Clinic. I was tested for a UTI and started on an antibiotic but they did a culture which showed a different bacteria and was changed to a different one.
Please send
You can order on their website – https://www.semainehealth.com/products/urinary-tract-cleanse-protect
My father in law gets frequent uti’s because he has a catheter, would this help at all or does the catheter get in the way of the benefits?
Yes. Semaine actually has several customer responses from folks that care for family members with a catheter and report positive results.
Can I take this along with the antibiotic I am on currently for a ?UTI
Some studies indicate that cranberry may enhance the efficacy of antibiotics. We recommend discussing this with your healthcare provider to see if it’s right for you. Semaine has prepared detailed white papers on all their products, which you can find here: http://www.semainehealth.com/pages/talk-with-your-doctor.
I’ve been told by a nurse that some uti supplements cause incorrect results on dipstick tests and then require blood test to diagnose uti. Does this product cause these problems?
No it won’t interfere with urine analysis results.
I take , blood pressure meds ,also esteroides for adrenal gland deficiency, I do get uti more often now ,can I take this pills?
Many inflammation-reducing products, whether natural or pharmaceutical, can slightly thin the blood. This is because they often target pathways shared by both inflammation and blood clotting processes. While generally not a concern, if you have certain health conditions or take medications, it’s wise to consult your doctor before starting any supplements. Stay informed and stay safe! 💚

This is the perfect Bladder cleanse capsule. I normally take them before my period since I am prone to UTI’s, and it seems to help with strengthening my bladder during my cycle.
How do I get in touch with your company to order?
You can order directly on their website or find them in Walmart!

Since this acts as a diuretic will it cause dehydration?
Hibiscus is a very mild diuretic so it’s very unlikely to cause dehydration. If you are concerned you can increase water intake a bit to compensate. And as always talk to your doctor to be sure.
can i take this with d-mannose?
You can but you will likely find you don’t need to!
Can UTI’s be missed on test. I have heard several people say that they could not detect their UTI’s in their urine test. If so, is there a certain test that does detect it? Also does an enlarged prostate cause UTI’s? Thank you
Absolutely. Low grade infections can be missed. You can and should always ask for a urine culture!
What about someone who doesn’t have a bladder but has a bag on their side? My mom has constant Utis and has been diagnosed with dementia.
It’s probably best to check with your doctor, but I do know there are many customers using Semaine with catheters and other urinary medical devices.
Is it safe to take this product along with high blood pressure medication? Specifically lisinipril, hydrochlorthiazide and norvasc.

Yes…is it safe to separate from the capsule …dilute and put down a feeding tube???
Yes they have a few users who use this product in that fashion. Always best to check with your doctor if you have concerns though!

Just a comment. I saw first hand how UTIs affect the brain. While our family was in the hospital with my nephew and stayed at his bedside waiting for him to pass away my sister suddenly began exhibiting bizarre behavior. The nursing staff recognized what was possibly happening when they heard she was having frequent UTIs. They put her in a wheelchair and proceeded to take her to a special section dedicated to treat this situation. It was to treat “Delirium” which is NOT Dementia. It has sudden onset and usually when the UTI in older people is treated it goes away. That is why it is so important to alert Healthcare workers about testing for suspected UTIs and not to assume an immediate diagnosis of dementia. After this happened we routinely maintained preventative daily pure cranberry juice…which I have done the same for myself. If a person can’t find a way to take a daily “shot” of the PURE 100% cranberry juice concentrate and not a juice that can be found that says 100% “FRUIT Juice” “Cranberry” … read the content description on the back of the bottle to see if other juices are also mixed in. Because you will not know how much is actually cranberry juice.
So, if this supplement lists the greatest percent present as cranberry it may be an equal alternative. I just wanted to add this additional info for clarification and would recommend that people look at the definition and description of “Delerium”…this might dispel some of the worry about the possible mistaken immediate diagnosis of Dementia.
Appreciate the feedback! Thank you for sharing this story and this detail!
My dad has frequently recurring UTI’s, but also has a g-tube. Are these extended release or can the contents of the capsule be put in a feeding tube all at once?
Yes they have a few users who use this product in that fashion. Always best to check with your doctor if you have concerns though!
Is it best to order from Amazon, Walmart or Facebook?
Any of those is fine. You can also order directly from their website.

Why is this advertised as for elderly? Is this treatment useful for women in their 30’s with frequent UTIs?
Sure! This article is just focusing on the increased risk of UTIs as we age but Semaine is great for anyone with frequent infections!
Joannie, If you are sexually active, remember to urinate afterwards. Many UTIs can come from sexual activity. Joan
I can’t believe you just mentioned urinating after intercourse!
I know that’s a fact but Never, ever has a doctor ever said that to me or anyone I know!!!
This happened to my mom as well. She seemed so out of it and it was a UTI. I’m 65 and have had UTIs most of my life and I recently started taking a product from hellobonofide because what I thought a was UTI’s wasn’t. Much pain and even weakness. It’s a suppository that adds moisture back into the vaginal canal I was missing. I do still get UTI’s periodically and can always tell because they do affect my mind differently than when I was younger. I will check this product out.
Can you take this if you have CKD?
I only have one kidney and my ckd is 3B

I saw this first hand while working as a hairdresser at an Assisted Living Home. Sometimes I was the one who spotted it first. At that point the only thing that helped them was antibiotics.
When your young you feel the pain from a UTI and get it checked right away. No so when your older. They don’t always feel the pain or recognize something is wrong. A UTI can go on for weeks.
That is exactly right! They don’t always feel that frequency or burning that we feel when we are younger. They can go a long time without someone realizing they have a UTI because of that.
I’m 70 and I still feel it. Very uncomfortable.
Thank you for sharing!
Especially when they give everyone Tylenol in their daily meds!! It’s terrible. I’ve worked in the dementia side of assisted living should say dying! Loved ones should really keep an eye on them in there. Especially on weekends now! Sad 😢
Will this affect kidneys?
It was formulated with kidney health in mind. If you get UTIs, you are at much higher risk of getting kidney stones. And if you get kidney stones, you’re more likely to get UTIs.
To help break this cycle, they included hibiscus extract. One thing that this does is bind to oxalates to help prevent them from coming together to turn into kidney stones.
I have heard if you get kidney stones you should not have cranberry juice it forms more.
Best to talk to your doctor if you are concerned about that. Semaine has white papers to make that conversation easier.

Unable to buy a single bottle to check it out. I do not want to commit to a subscription. If it is as good as you claim, I would appreciate hearing from you to buy one bottle.
No problem. You just select “One-Time Purchase” on the website before adding to your cart on their website!

Can capsules be opened. My mom can’t swallow ANY pills.
They can be opened and put into food like applesauce or smoothies.
Is this product only used when you have an active UTI? Or can it be used as daily prevention?
Oh it’s great for both!
Can I just try one bottle to see if it works? Don’t want to commit to a monthly plan if it doesn’t….
Yep! You can select One-Time Purchase before putting it in your cart.

My mom, 78 has had constant UTIs for the last 5 years.. dementia is definitely creeping in.. she has changed overnight. Her dr moved away and really won’t go to a primary care. She does drink water, eats minimal but lives with a UTI:/
I’m so soo sorry. UTIs can lead to cognitive symptoms, particularly in older adults, because the infection triggers systemic inflammation and immune responses. This inflammation releases cytokines and other immune molecules that can affect brain function, potentially disrupting neurotransmitter signaling and leading to confusion or cognitive decline. Additionally, UTIs can exacerbate electrolyte imbalances or dehydration, further impairing brain function and cognitive clarity.
If left untreated or if UTIs are recurrent, the ongoing inflammation and immune response increases the risk of developing permanent dementia. That is why it is referred to as “UTI-induced dementia.”
Is this just for women. My husband has recurring utis and what I thought was dementia, but the Drs won’t diagnose Dementia. Si I did my own research and found the uti dementia link..
Men can take this product too!
My dad had a severe mental break that was totally related to a bad UTI. Antibiotics helped him tremendously. If he was still alive, I would definitely get this for him.
Thank you so much for sharing so others can know the risks. I’m am terribly sorry for the loss of your father.
Recently my hubby had a severe UTI and ended up in the hospital for 5-1/2 days. He was wild as a buck and had to have 3 security guards hold him down so a nurse could give him a shot to calm him down. He was in acute kidney failure. He was big time having hallucinations. They got the UTI under control, and several days later they removed a kidney stone. In 2018 he had a UTI and had different symptoms. He couldn’t even write his own name, and had to be lead by the hand. The UTI’s can do a real number on some people. By the way, he is doing just fine now!
I have uti’s with acid ingestion I’m 77 just had oe after drinking too much lemon juice in my water
Urologist told me since I am not sexually active now that my urethra is aged dry and that is what causes
But my reason for posting is that the symptoms stated are what happens
Switching to a supplement could definitely help you avoid the acid reflux that comes with drinking too many acidic beverages!
Actually my gastro said it’s not caused by acidic beverages, our stomachs have higher acid level than anything we drink so it doesn’t bother it.
However spicy foods or coffee could be aggravating.

You might need a hormone vaginal suppository like Estrodiol tabs. Ask your OB/GYN
Please ask your doctor about a plant-based estrogen product. It takes such a small amount for the area and helps tremendously!
Decline in estrogen and the resulting vaginal atrophy are a significant reason for the increase in UTIs as a woman ages. There are estrogen creams as another commenter mentioned, and Semaine also makes a product that contains plant based estrogen which could help! https://www.semainehealth.com/products/menopause-essentials
I’m 77 too, and I’m not sexually active. I use a bit of lemon juice in water sometimes but it has never caused a UTI. Do you take this Semaine’s Urinary Tract Cleanse & Protect supplement now? If so, do you recommend it for others like me?
Hi, I’m 66 & I highly recommend this, I even got a friend on it that kept getting utis & in the emergency room. She hasn’t had one since being on this. It’s wonderful ~
Thank you for sharing!! That is wonderful news!!
Some ladies use estrogen cream also to restore their vagina. Thin walls allow bacteria to penetrate the body. Ask your dr for a prescription. If he says no get a different doctor.
No more exogenous estrogen, post-menopause, to keep us lubricated.
This sounds like what I need
If you give it a try, make sure to let me know how it works!
Is this to treat UTI’S or to take to prevent UTI’S?
Both!
I have taken this daily since last September- I haven’t had any more uti’s. I am prone to them often. Hoping that this helps others like it has helped me.
That is wonderful to hear! Do you remember how quickly you noticed a difference?
