Sensitive Tummies Rejoice: I Found a Probiotic That’s Gentle AND Effective

stomach ach

Have you ever tried taking probiotics for gut health, but they seemed to make it worse? Often you need to give your body a few days to adjust to them, but there’s more to it than that, which I’ll get into later.

I personally have a lot of gut issues which I believe stem from popping ibuprofen like candy in junior high and high school for period cramps. (It was that or birth control and the latter never helped.) Unfortunately, the dangers of these instantaneous pain relief pills aren’t really talked about in detail, but they can wreak havoc on your gut microbiome and stomach lining. Since 70% of the immune system is in the gut, it only makes sense to prioritize its well-being.

I was recently prescribed an NSAID that was supposed to be “gentle on the stomach,” and yet I still found myself in the ER due to extreme abdominal pain only a few days after taking it. They found inflammation in both my stomach and my intestines. The only change I had made was adding said pills to my routine, so I knew it was the culprit.

Today, I can’t take NSAIDs in any form. And yes, I was taking them with food; it didn’t help. I was also prescribed a topical NSAID cream but still ended up with gastritis after using it. I was bedridden for several days and only able to stomach bone broth. I had virtually no appetite, which is unlike me, and the food I normally love tasted off to me.

My belly was extremely bloated due to the inflammation and was hard to the touch.

I did some googling and found that even in a topical form, NSAIDs can still cause stomach and intestinal issues for people with sensitive stomachs. Which is definitely me. Once I finally put together why it was happening, I stopped using the cream.

Gut health is overall health

I knew I needed a probiotic to rebuild my gut health and in turn my immune system, but I also knew I needed to be intentional about which one I chose. I needed it to be effective but also gentle enough for my sensitive tummy.

One of the key things to take into consideration when choosing a probiotic is if you consume enough fiber. If you don’t, you won’t be able to feed the probiotics you’re putting into your gut—which at that point makes it almost worthless.

I eat lots of fruits and vegetables every day but figured it wouldn’t hurt to have prebiotics in my probiotic. Even if I fall off the wagon of eating well every day it would mean I was covered on those “cheat” days.

I also wanted to help ease the inflammation. I knew my insides were crying for help and support and I wanted to give it to them in the gentlest form. I already had turmeric capsules on hand, but I wanted something that was more geared for the stomach versus general help with inflammation.

Semaine Health to the rescue

I was already taking The Daily Hormone Balance and Urinary Tract Cleanse & Protect and had great success with both, so it made sense for me to consider Semaine’s Pre+Probiotic for Women. Just like the name states, it has both pre and probiotics. What makes it different is that they also add ginger, which soothes the inflammation and is gentle on sensitive stomachs. This sounded like the perfect option for me.

Within just a few days of use, my appetite was back, and my stomach wasn’t as bloated. Hooray! My sensitive tummy was so happy and ready to eat all the things again. I really missed eating.

Pre+Probiotic for Women: The Details

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty behind why I chose this supplement.

  • The probiotic strains included are Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Plantarum, which are two of the best-studied probiotic strains with an extensive safety profile.
    • Lactobacillus Acidophilus has been shown to help with intestinal health and in reducing rates of BV (bacterial vaginitis).
    • Lactobacillus Plantarum has been shown to reduce intestinal inflammation and to reduce yeast infections.
  • The prebiotic blend included is psyllium husks and acacia gum, which are extremely well tolerated by the general population.
    • The presence of a prebiotic with a probiotic significantly increases the health of the microbiome and helps the probiotic take hold so you’re not just flushing the money you spend on probiotics down the toilet.
  • Ginger is well-documented to help lower inflammation in the intestines and to help with an upset stomach.
    • It has an excellent safety profile and is dosed in this capsule to be effective without causing heartburn.

So, to recap, not only do they use ingredients that are well-studied, but they also make sure they’ll work together effectively, and you can simultaneously support gut and vaginal health. Win, win, win!

Take it from a girl with an extremely sensitive tummy, this supplement put my gut health back on track and gave me a new lease on life.
