Is There an Antioxidant That Can Slow Aging?

I’m in my 30s, so I know things are starting to change in my body. Everyone always tells me I need collagen, but I wasn’t sure which one to choose. I decided instead of listening to the internet, I should go directly to the experts.

Semaine Health is a proud women-operated business on a mission to support women and hormonal health through high-quality supplements. They’re raising the standard for supplements by using clinically proven formulas tested by real people, science-backed ingredients, and working with FDA-approved manufacturers.

Being a loyal customer of Semaine Health, I’ve experienced the positive impact of their supplements on my life. When I learned about their latest addition, the collagen gummy, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

More than just a collagen gummy

The Hair & Skin Gummy is different from your average collagen gummy, though. It has a very special ingredient: astaxanthin (pronounced “asta-ZAN-thin”). Astaxanthin is nature’s most potent antioxidant and boasts impressive abilities.

  • Increases skin moisture
  • Improves skin texture
  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Evens hyperpigmentation
  • Boosts cellular health
  • Promotes healthy aging

The Hair & Skin Gummy is also formulated with vitamin E, biotin, vitamin C, and of course, collagen.

  • Vitamin E prevents oxidative stress from affecting your skin and helps you use collagen more effectively.
  • Biotin is a key vitamin in the production of keratin, which is needed to make hair and nails and has been shown to boost hair and nail strength.
  • Vitamin C is effective in reducing oxidative stress, improving cellular health, and boosting the immune system.
  • Collagen has been shown to boost skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and benefit joints.

I was really curious about this astaxanthin stuff and its role in promoting healthy aging. I actually had the pleasure of sitting down with Chief Science Officer and Co-founder Dr. Matt Crane, Ph.D, to chat about why he chose it for this formulation and what Semaine’s interest is in tackling these symptoms. Dr. Matt is married to CEO and Co-founder Lauren Lee.

”Lauren and Matt are the husband-and-wife duo of Semaine. Their journey led them to seek answers for Lauren’s endometriosis and period pain. Utilizing Matt’s biology PhD, they developed the first clinically studied PMS supplement for rapid relief. Now, Semaine is on a mission to inspire a future where women’s health and hormones are celebrated and understood.”

Sitting down with Dr. Matt

Rachel: Thanks so much for chatting with me today, Dr. Matt! I’m so excited to learn more about the new Hair & Skin Gummy! Before we dive into the nitty gritty and talk about your innovative formula, can you tell me a little bit about your background?

Dr. Matt: Sure! I’m a Washington State native. I got my BS/MS from Case Western Reserve University and my Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Neuroscience from Georgia Tech. It was when Lar & I moved to Seattle so I could join the faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology. While I was on staff there, my academic research focus was on the biology of aging. It was really fascinating because I was finding this recurring theme of how food and the environment influence inflammation and chronic disease.

Rachel: Is that when you discovered astaxanthin?

Dr. Matt: Yep. It does a lot in the anti-aging department.

Rachel: How does astaxanthin help with anti-aging exactly?

Dr. Matt: Clinical studies have shown that astaxanthin increases skin moisture, improves skin texture, and reduces wrinkles. Basically, as we age, our cells also age. What was once a well-oiled machine doesn’t function quite the same way anymore. Our cells may not divide or multiply properly anymore; they may lose their ability to function or start functioning abnormally. But astaxanthin boosts our cellular health, and one of the ways it seems to do this is by helping to boost the output of mitochondria, which are our cellular plants.

Rachel: I guess that made it a shoo-in for the Hair & Skin Gummy, then. I heard astaxanthin is another way to protect our skin from sun damage. Kind of like sunscreen! Is that true?

Dr. Matt: In a way, yes. It’s been shown to reduce how vulnerable people are to sunburns. So, it’s almost like an edible sunscreen. It works by protecting your skin from UV damage from the sun. Obviously, sun damage leads to the skin aging much faster, so this little boost can help prevent that. For instance, dark spots, or hyperpigmentation, are often caused by our skin cells being unsure of how to respond to the sun. Astaxanthin supports your cells, which helps them respond better, which means less hyperpigmentation and can even help it go away.

Rachel: Oh, that is very cool. Can you tell me a little bit about the collagen you use? I understand this is Semaine’s first non-vegan product.

Dr. Matt: Yes, it is. Collagen can’t be vegan by nature since it comes from animal protein. We use hydrolyzed grass-fed bovine collagen in the gummy. Hydrolyzed collagen is more easily absorbed by the body, helping to boost skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and support joint health more effectively. We also include Vitamin E because it helps your body use collagen more effectively.

Rachel: And what’s the flavor profile like?

Dr. Matt: It’s an acai berry spritz. If you’ve tried our PMS gummies, this one is a little less sweet than those. Some people taste hints of cherry and berry, while others only notice that classic acai flavor. It’s also a bit more bouncy than the PMS gummy due to the collagen.

Rachel: That sounds tasty! Well, I know you’re a busy guy, but thank you so much for sitting down with me. This was all super enlightening, and I love understanding the science behind how supplements work.

Dr. Matt: You’re welcome! Happy to chat!

After sitting down with Dr. Matt, I was definitely convinced I should give The Hair & Skin Gummy a try. I love that it’s rooted in science, and I can’t wait to reap the benefits! I mean, who doesn’t want to look and feel younger longer?
